About the Classic

It’s on again, the biggest event in Cape York . The dates for the 2010 Weipa Fishing Classic have been set to coincide with the Queens Birthday   long weekend, Friday 11 June through to Sunday 13 June 2010 . The 2010 Classic will be run solely for community benefit, with all proceeds supporting a large number of local community and sporting groups.

This is the fifth year the Classic has been held, and it is fast becoming a “must attend” event. The Weipa Fishing Classic and is one of the largest fishing competitions in Queensland. With volunteers from throughout the community to ensure its success, the Weipa Fishing Classic continues to experience steady growth. Predicted nominations this year are 1300 competitors, which we believe confirms our commitment to the Weipa Community and our sponsors. The Weipa Fishing Classic continues to be a huge success.

Live entertainment will be provided throughout the week-end with performances from Cairns band, Audio Scam  and local performers. Bar & food facilities will be available on the grounds throughout the week-end.

Nominations/tickets will open mid May 2010   and will be available from the following Weipa businesses:-

  • Betta Electrical   located within Weipa News & Sports
  • Weipa 4WD Spares & Camping Supplies , Heritage Shopping Centre

Competitors will be required to complete a nomination form and pay a fee at the time of entry:

  • 2010 nomination fees are $55 open entry   and $25 junior entry
  • Junior Entries are not eligible for the major prize draw.

Catch & Weigh   eligible species for Senior Competition are (9 categories) Salmon, Fingermark, Tusker, Grunter, Queenfish, Mackeral, Trevally, Coral Trout/Red Emperor/Nannygai and Barramundi only.

Competitors can still catch and weigh in barra either side of the specified size (as long as they are legal), but the person who wins each section (Junior and Senior) will be the person closest to the specified size with the heaviest fish.
